For First time visitors...

WELCOME!!

This blog serves to document my sightings of fauna/flora in Singapore!! And by doing so, I hope that the reader would realise that there are still pockets of natures even though most of Singapore is urbanised. Also, more importantly, knowing what we have could be the first step to protecting them. :)

CONSERVATION starts right here at home!!!

Sister's Island 9 May 09 4.30-7.30am

My first southern island intertidal trip was at Sister's Island. Here are what I saw.

Acropora. Tingyu's favourite?? :P
Photobucket

Not sure what kind of coral this is. If anyone knows, let me know?
*UPDATE: I learnt that to ID the coral, we NEED to take close up photos next time to see polyps and corallites. So, next time!! :)
Photobucket

Faviid Coral. Really common. neon green in colour
Photobucket

Here is another coral.. Ria mentioned the name but i've forgotten it already~ I've really got short-term memory.
*UPDATE: Long hard mushroom coral but upside down
(see http://www.wildsingapore.com/wildfacts/cnidaria/coralhard/fungiidae/fungiidae.htm)

Photobucket

I suppose this is a Mushroom coral but the colour looks rather odd. Kok Sheng found another 2 more. Not abundant.
Photobucket

Hollow-cheeked Stonefish (Synanceia horrida). Really REALLY small.
Photobucket

Weird stuff... Couldnt get a good photos partially due to my poor skills and the tide was coming it..
*UPDATE: Probably Broad zoanthid
(see http://www.wildsingapore.com/wildfacts/cnidaria/others/zoanthid/mutuki.htm)
Photobucket

Red Nose Shrimp (Periclimenes sp.) These shrimps are really small, about 1cm long. But rather abundant.
Photobucket

Another photograph of the Red Nose Shrimp
Photobucket

Gigantic Mantis Shrimp (Order Stomatopoda). This is my first sighting of this cool shrimp!!! :)
Photobucket

Then, it suddenly arches its back and I saw a tiny shrimp came out from the hole the Mantis Shrimp was covering...
Photobucket

My photography skills aint good yet. So, for better photos see kok sheng's blog (Wonderful Creations).
Photobucket

There was also many crabs... This is also an important photo that would remind me of what Kok Sheng said, "To take good photos, must not have too contrasting things together." I also learn how to take good photos during the trips!! :)
Photobucket

While waiting for the lighting and rain to stop, we saw a land hermit crab.
Photobucket

Its shell was slightly chipped off, so you could see the internal.
Photobucket
Another common Swimming crab. :)
Photobucket

Mosaic Reef Crab (Lophozozymus pictor). This is the best find for the trip and I really like the colour of its shell!! This crab is listed as 'Endangered' on the Red List of threatened animals of Singapore and the MOST POISONOUS CRAB. Apparently, it's having its meal (=urchin).
Photobucket

Yellow-lipped sea krait (Laticauda colubrina). Kok Sheng found a very pretty yet shy sea snake. We were actually chasing it as it kept swimming away.
Photobucket

Nice Sunrise to end the trip. :)

  1. FABULOUS! I love your blog! It's a great account of the trip and you sure saw lots of interesting animals doing interesting things! Thank you for sharing!

The long hard coral is probably a mushroom coral (Family Fungidae) that got turned upside down. We need to see the upperside to find out what it is.
